Now a respected and lively pundit for Sky TV, David’s recall of his own career and his views on the current Test scene will make fascinating listening.

On the eve of the opening game of the European football championships in France, we have a real treat for members and guests with the return of Paul Merson, the former England, Arsenal, Aston villa, Middlesborough and Walsall star – and hugely popular pundit on sky sports, as well as some informative analysis of the matches ahead, “Merse” will bring along his storybook with some hilarious anecdotes from his colourful career as a player then manager.

Glamorgan and England spinner Robert Croft MBE

On March 7th at the Belfry where we welcomed the Glamorgan and England spinner Robert Croft MBE who talked with us and previewed the exciting and forthcoming Ashes series as well as England’s current touring results, Robert was ably supported by the raconteur and ex-policeman Peter Edge.

 

 

December 2012 Sporting Riches!

The December Belfry brought sporting riches beyond belief, we heard from M.J.K. Smith of Oxford, Warwickshire and England cricket fame, who also played rugby union For England, Neil Smith the former English cricketer who played in 7 ODIs from 1986 to 1996 and is the son of the former England test captain, M J K Smith plus Darren Maddy the Warwickshire all-rounders and ex-Captain, who played three Tests and eight One Day Internationals for England, making one international fifty in his ten innings between 1998 and 2000.

We were also entertained by Mark ‘Ronnie’ Regan MBE the outrageous hooker who played for Bristol, Bath, Leeds Tykes as well as England and the British Lions.

 

18th October 2012 with a Golfling Legend

Peter McEvoy OBE joined us in October, who is the former British (twice), European (twice) and World amateur champion and England’s most successful amateur golfer, course designer and golf writer. Twice Captain of the Walker Cup team and the first British amateur golfer to make the cut at the Masters Tournament, he devised and launched PowerPlay Golf, a shortened version of golf in a bid to create golf’s version of Twenty20 cricket and has written about the sport in his book ‘For Love or Money’.

Another great Belfry Sporting Club dinner with the evergreen “Big Ron” Atkinson. Ron enthralled the packed audience with legendary tales of his footballing management career and a few choice views on the game overall – the winners of the ‘Big Ron Top Team” were treated by Chair Joe Stainer to a prize and the evening was rounded off with a fabulous Q and A hosted by sporting club favourite Peter McGovern.

Our pre-Xmas Dinner Evening took place in the Warwick Suite on Thursday December 1st 2011, and our star guest speaker was the renowned Rugby pundit and broadcaster IAN ROBERTSON, who had some pithy observations to make upon England’s Rugby World Cup campaign, as well as providing his usual great level of entertainment.

“Motty” reveals some great moments 

Great night with John “Motty” Motson and Ricky George at the Belfry. A change of venue in the Lichfield Suite was a nice touch for the 150 guests and we were extremely well entertained by the commentating legend, who preceded his talk with a wonderful 10 minute compilation of “Motty’s Moments” on DVD.

“It was a superb Belfry evening as ever” commented Joe Stainer, Chairman of the Sporting Club “to meet up with old friends, share a few stories, a drink or two and hear a commentating legend is a great treat”

John raffled one of his infamous prompt cards at the end of the evening for charity.

Oct 21 2010 Dinner, the Sporting Club welcomed snooker legend, STEVE DAVIS, who was our main speaker with Guest of Honour PETER BONETTI, the original Cat, who gave a discourse on the importance of goalkeepers not dropping major howlers at World Cups.

Brazil has earned a reputation as a fans’ favourite on talkSPORT and began his radio career in Ipswich, with Radio Suffolk, where he was a co-commentator. His easy way of communicating grabbed the attentions of Anglia TV in Norwich, where he got his first TV exposure and later led to appearances on GMTV as well as Andy Gray’s The Boot Room on Sky TV.

British Lions and Ireland Prop Forward Paul Wallace

We enjoyed a wonderful night in the company of Ireland and British Lions prop forward, Paul Wallace on Thursday 22nd October.  Taking the club members through his early life, breaking into the infamous Munster ranks and enjoying professional rugby at Saracens in the early days of professional rugby with greats such as Francois Pieraal, Philippe Sella and Michael Lymugh.  Paul also took us on a unique tour through the 1997 British Lions winning team, unveiling the culture of winning Ian McGeechan engendered against a seemingly superior Springbok team.  Thank you Paul.
